Sleeve Gastrectomy in India

Quick answer

Sleeve gastrectomy is weight-loss surgery that removes a large part of the stomach, leaving a narrow tube or 'sleeve'. It suits adults with severe obesity, often with related conditions like diabetes or sleep apnoea. Hospital stay is usually a few days, and most international patients stay in India one to two weeks.

The operation permanently removes the outer, stretchy part of the stomach. The smaller stomach holds less food, so you feel full sooner. It also lowers ghrelin, a hunger hormone made mostly in the removed part.

Sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most common bariatric (weight-loss) operations worldwide. It does not reroute the intestines, which keeps it simpler than a bypass. Because it cannot be reversed, it needs a lifelong commitment to diet changes, vitamins and follow-up.

Approaches: standard, keyhole (laparoscopic) or robotic

Today almost all sleeve gastrectomies are done by keyhole surgery; open surgery is now rare and kept for unusual situations. Laparoscopic surgery is the standard, widely available option. Robotic surgery uses the same principles with a robot-held camera and instruments, which some surgeons prefer for patients with very high BMI or previous abdominal surgery.

Who needs sleeve gastrectomy

  • Adults with a BMI in the severe obesity range, as defined by current guidelines
  • People with a lower BMI who also have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea
  • Those who could not keep weight off with supervised diet, exercise and medicines
  • Patients judged fit for general anaesthesia and committed to follow-up
  • Patients with joint pain or fatty liver worsened by excess weight

How it is done

  1. You receive general anaesthesia.
  2. The surgeon makes small cuts in the abdomen for a camera and instruments (keyhole or robotic).
  3. A calibration tube is placed in the stomach to set the sleeve width.
  4. A stapling device divides the stomach along its length.
  5. The removed portion of the stomach is taken out through one of the small cuts.
  6. The staple line is checked for leaks and bleeding before closing the cuts.

Before you travel to India

  • Recent blood tests: sugar, HbA1c, thyroid, liver and kidney function
  • Sleep study report if you snore heavily or have sleep apnoea
  • Heart check (ECG, and echocardiogram if advised)
  • List of all medicines, especially diabetes and blood pressure drugs
  • A family member or companion to support you during the first week

Recovery and flying home

  • Hospital stay is usually a few days.
  • You start on clear liquids, then move through puree and soft food over several weeks.
  • Walking from the first day lowers the risk of blood clots.
  • A check before flying is usual; many patients fly home within one to two weeks.
  • Daily vitamins and protein supplements are lifelong.
  • Regular follow-up with a dietitian and surgeon continues, often by video call.

Risks

  • Leak from the staple line
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots in the legs or lungs
  • New or worse acid reflux (heartburn)
  • Vitamin and mineral deficiencies
  • Weight regain if eating habits slip

Alternatives

  • Gastric bypass: reroutes the intestine and may suit people with severe reflux or diabetes
  • Mini gastric bypass: a single-join bypass option
  • Intragastric balloon: a temporary, non-surgical option
  • Weight-loss medicines with lifestyle support

Frequently asked questions

How much of my stomach is removed in a sleeve gastrectomy?

A large part of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow tube. The exact size is set during surgery using a tube as a guide. The removed part cannot be put back.

Will I have acid reflux after sleeve gastrectomy?

Some people develop new reflux, and existing reflux can get worse. If you already have bad heartburn, your surgeon may suggest a bypass instead. Tell your team about any reflux symptoms.

Can sleeve gastrectomy be changed to another operation later?

Yes. If weight is regained or reflux becomes severe, a sleeve can often be converted to a bypass. This is a second operation with its own risks.

What diet do I follow after sleeve gastrectomy?

You begin with liquids, then purees, then soft foods, and finally normal textures over several weeks. Meals become small and protein-focused. A dietitian gives you a written plan to follow at home.

How is follow-up arranged for international patients?

Most hospitals offer video consultations with the surgeon and dietitian. You will also need blood tests at home at set intervals. Ask for a written follow-up schedule before you leave India.
