Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy in India

Quick answer

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is the keyhole way of doing a sleeve, using a camera and long instruments through several small cuts. It is the standard approach for most patients with severe obesity. Most people leave hospital in a few days and are usually ready to fly within about two weeks.

In the laparoscopic method, the abdomen is gently filled with gas to create working space. The surgeon watches a high-definition screen while stapling the stomach. No large opening is made, so there is less pain and a shorter stay than open surgery.

Laparoscopy is the most widely practised technique for this operation, and many bariatric surgeons in India perform it routinely. Results depend greatly on the surgeon's experience and the centre's bariatric programme, including dietitians and anaesthetists trained for patients with high body weight.

How this approach differs

The laparoscopic method replaces a large abdominal cut with several keyhole cuts. The surgeon holds the instruments directly, guided by a magnified camera view. Compared with open surgery, recovery is faster with less pain and lower wound infection risk. It suits almost all candidates; very high BMI, a large liver or previous surgery can make it harder, and some surgeons then consider robotic assistance.

Who needs laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy

  • Most adults who qualify for sleeve gastrectomy
  • Patients without extensive scar tissue from earlier abdominal surgery
  • People who want a well-established approach with wide availability
  • Patients with diabetes or fatty liver who meet bariatric criteria
  • Those for whom a robotic system is not available or not needed

How it is done

  1. General anaesthesia is given and you are positioned semi-upright.
  2. Several small cuts (each about the width of a finger) are made in the upper abdomen.
  3. Gas is used to lift the abdominal wall, and a camera is inserted.
  4. The liver is held up gently to expose the stomach.
  5. Blood vessels along the outer curve of the stomach are sealed with an energy device.
  6. Staplers divide the stomach along a guiding tube, and the removed part comes out through a port.

Before you travel to India

  • Ultrasound of the abdomen, especially to check liver size and gallstones
  • Blood tests including HbA1c, vitamin D, B12 and iron
  • A pre-operative low-calorie diet, often for a couple of weeks, to shrink the liver, if your surgeon advises
  • Lung and heart check if you have breathing problems

Recovery and flying home

  • Most patients stay in hospital for a few days.
  • Shoulder-tip pain from the gas is common and settles quickly.
  • The small cuts usually heal within a couple of weeks.
  • Many international patients fly home after a post-operative check, often around the second week.
  • Light work is often possible within a couple of weeks; heavy lifting waits longer.

Risks

  • Staple line leak
  • Bleeding from the staple line or port sites
  • Port-site hernia (a weakness at a cut, uncommon)
  • Blood clots
  • Reflux and nutrient deficiencies over time
  • Conversion to open surgery in rare cases

Alternatives

  • Robotic sleeve gastrectomy: robot-assisted keyhole surgery
  • Laparoscopic gastric bypass: may be preferred with severe reflux
  • Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty: stomach folded from inside without cuts, where available
  • Intragastric balloon for temporary weight loss

Frequently asked questions

How many cuts will I have after a laparoscopic sleeve?

Usually four to six small cuts in the upper abdomen. They leave small scars that fade over time. One cut may be slightly larger to remove the stomach portion.

Why do I need to diet before surgery?

A short low-calorie diet shrinks the liver. A smaller liver is easier to lift during keyhole surgery, which makes the operation safer. Your team will tell you exactly what to eat.

Is laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy painful?

Most people have moderate pain for a few days, controlled with medicines. Shoulder pain from the gas is common but short-lived. Walking helps it ease.

Could my operation be changed to open surgery?

Rarely, the surgeon may need to convert to open surgery for safety. This might happen with heavy bleeding or difficult anatomy. It is discussed with you beforehand.

When can I fly home after a laparoscopic sleeve?

Many patients fly after a check-up in the second week. Walk often and drink fluids during the flight to lower clot risk. Your team may advise blood-thinning injections for travel.
