Robotic Radical Prostatectomy in India

Quick answer

Robotic radical prostatectomy removes the prostate for cancer using a surgeon-controlled robot through small abdominal ports. The 3D magnified view and wristed instruments help with nerve-sparing and suturing. It is used for men whose cancer is confined to the prostate. Hospital stay is short, and most international patients stay a couple of weeks for catheter removal.

Robotic prostatectomy is now one of the most common ways prostate cancer surgery is performed at large hospitals. The surgeon sits at a console a few metres from the patient and controls instruments that can rotate and bend inside the pelvis.

The pelvis is deep and narrow, so this is where robotic advantages show most. Delicate nerve bundles can be peeled away from the prostate under high magnification, and the bladder-urethra join can be stitched with fine, controlled movements.

How this approach differs

The robot gives a stable 3D magnified view and wristed instruments that move more freely than straight laparoscopic tools, which can aid fine nerve-sparing and suturing deep in the pelvis. Compared with open surgery, blood loss and hospital stay are usually lower. Long-term cancer control and function depend more on surgeon experience than approach. Robotic surgery generally costs more and is available at selected centres.

Who needs robotic radical prostatectomy

  • Localised prostate cancer in men fit for surgery
  • Men wanting nerve-sparing surgery where feasible
  • Larger prostates or narrow pelvises
  • Men seeking shorter hospital stay
  • Selected high-risk cancers within a combined treatment plan

How it is done

  1. General anaesthesia is given and the patient is positioned head-down.
  2. Ports are placed and the robot is docked.
  3. The prostate is freed, with nerve-sparing where suitable.
  4. The prostate and seminal vesicles are removed.
  5. The bladder is stitched to the urethra with robotic instruments.
  6. Lymph node sampling is added where risk is higher, then a catheter is inserted.

Before you travel to India

  • Biopsy report, prostate MRI and PSA
  • Staging scans such as PSMA PET if done
  • Baseline urinary and erectile function details
  • Previous abdominal surgery history
  • Plan stay to cover catheter removal

Recovery and flying home

  • Many men leave hospital within a short stay.
  • Catheter removal occurs before flying home.
  • Walking and light activity begin soon after surgery.
  • Pelvic floor exercises speed continence recovery.
  • Regular PSA tests follow.

Risks

  • Urinary leakage
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Bleeding
  • Anastomotic leak
  • Positioning-related problems

Alternatives

  • Laparoscopic prostatectomy
  • Open prostatectomy
  • Radiotherapy or active surveillance

Frequently asked questions

Does robotic surgery improve continence and erections?

Some studies show earlier recovery, but differences are modest. Surgeon experience and cancer extent matter more.

Is robotic prostatectomy available in India?

Yes, at many major hospitals. We help confirm surgeon experience.

Is it more expensive?

Usually yes, due to equipment costs. Hospitals provide estimates after reviewing your case.

How long should international patients plan to stay?

Plan a couple of weeks to allow catheter removal and review. Pathology results may also come in this time. Keep flight dates flexible.

Who is not suitable for robotic surgery?

Men with certain heart or lung conditions that make head-down positioning unsafe may not suit it. Extensive prior surgery may also matter.
