Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy in India

Quick answer

Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy removes the prostate for cancer through several small keyhole incisions, using a camera and long straight instruments. It suits men with localised prostate cancer. Compared with open surgery it usually means less blood loss and a shorter stay. Plan a couple of weeks in India for catheter removal.

The surgeon fills the abdomen or the space in front of the bladder with gas and works through five or so small ports. A high-definition camera gives a magnified view of the pelvis.

Laparoscopic prostatectomy needs advanced skills, especially for stitching the bladder to the urethra with straight instruments. Where robotic systems are not available or affordable, it offers a keyhole option.

How this approach differs

Compared with open surgery, laparoscopy uses small ports and a magnified camera view, which generally reduces blood loss, pain and hospital stay. Unlike robotic surgery, instruments are straight and handheld, which makes fine suturing harder and depends heavily on surgeon experience. Cancer control outcomes are broadly similar between experienced hands in all approaches. It may be a lower-cost keyhole option where robotic surgery is unavailable.

Who needs laparoscopic radical prostatectomy

  • Localised prostate cancer in men suitable for surgery
  • Men wanting keyhole surgery where robotic access is limited
  • Patients with moderate prostate size
  • Men without extensive previous pelvic surgery
  • Patients fit for prolonged head-down positioning

How it is done

  1. General anaesthesia is given and gas inflates the working space.
  2. Small ports are placed in the lower abdomen.
  3. The prostate is freed from the bladder, rectum and nerves.
  4. The prostate and seminal vesicles are removed in a bag.
  5. The bladder is stitched to the urethra laparoscopically.
  6. Lymph nodes may be removed and a catheter placed.

Frequently asked questions

Is laparoscopic as good as robotic?

In experienced hands, cancer outcomes are similar. Robotic surgery may make complex steps easier. Surgeon experience matters most.

Why choose laparoscopic over robotic?

It may be more accessible or affordable. Some surgeons have extensive laparoscopic experience. Discuss options.

What is the scar like?

Several small scars, one slightly larger for removing the prostate. They usually fade well.

When can an overseas patient fly home after keyhole prostatectomy?

Usually after catheter removal and a check that you are passing urine. This often fits within a couple of weeks. Your surgeon confirms.

Will I need further treatment?

Depends on final pathology and PSA. Some need radiotherapy. Your team will advise.
