Robotic Hernia Repair in India

Quick answer

Robotic hernia repair uses a surgeon-controlled robot to place mesh and close muscle gaps through small cuts. It is particularly useful for large or complex incisional hernias and abdominal wall reconstruction. Hospital stay ranges from a day to several days, and many patients fly home within one to two weeks.

The robot's wristed instruments make it easier to stitch the abdominal wall from inside. This allows surgeons to close muscle gaps and place mesh within the wall layers, avoiding direct contact with bowel.

Robotic techniques also allow complex procedures such as transversus abdominis release (TAR), which frees muscle layers to close large hernias. These were previously done only as open surgery.

How this approach differs

Compared with laparoscopic repair, the robot makes suturing inside the abdomen easier, so muscle gaps can be closed and mesh placed outside the abdominal cavity. Compared with open reconstruction, it avoids a large incision, which can lower wound complications. It suits large, complex or recurrent hernias; simple groin hernias may not need it. Costs are higher, and it is available in selected Indian centres.

Who needs robotic hernia repair

  • Large incisional or ventral hernias
  • Recurrent hernias after previous repairs
  • Patients with obesity
  • Hernias needing abdominal wall reconstruction
  • Combined hernia and other procedures

How it is done

  1. Under general anaesthesia, ports are inserted along the side of the abdomen.
  2. The robot is docked.
  3. The hernia contents are reduced.
  4. The muscle layers are separated and the gap is closed with stitches.
  5. Mesh is placed within the abdominal wall.
  6. The ports are removed and cuts closed.

Before you travel to India

  • CT scan of the abdominal wall
  • Previous surgery and mesh records
  • Weight and diabetes control
  • Smoking status, as stopping before surgery helps healing

Recovery and flying home

  • Hospital stay ranges from a day for simpler repairs to several days after reconstruction
  • An abdominal binder may be advised for comfort
  • Many patients can fly home within one to two weeks
  • Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise wait several weeks
  • Follow-up checks look for fluid collections and wound healing

Risks

  • Seroma
  • Recurrence
  • Infection
  • Bowel injury, which is rare
  • Chronic pain

Alternatives

  • Open repair
  • Laparoscopic repair
  • Watchful waiting

Frequently asked questions

What is transversus abdominis release (TAR)?

TAR is a technique that releases one of the deep side muscles of the abdomen. This lets the surgeon bring the central muscles together and close a large gap. Robotic tools allow it without a big open wound.

Is robotic repair needed for a simple groin hernia?

Usually not. Open or laparoscopic repair treats most simple groin hernias well. The robot adds most value in large, complex or repeat hernias.

Why do I need a CT scan before surgery?

CT shows the size of the muscle gap, the hernia contents and any old mesh. This helps the surgeon plan the repair. Bring the images, not just the report.

Does my weight affect the result?

Higher weight and smoking increase the chance of wound problems and recurrence. Your surgeon may advise weight loss or stopping smoking before surgery. This improves the chance of a lasting repair.

How long will I need to be in India after robotic reconstruction?

One to two weeks is common after complex repair. Simpler robotic repairs may allow earlier travel. The team confirms fitness to fly at review.
