Hernia Repair in India

Quick answer

Hernia repair pushes bulging tissue back into place and strengthens the weak spot in the abdominal wall, usually with a mesh. It treats groin, navel, incisional and other hernias. Most repairs need a day or two in hospital, and many patients can fly home within about a week.

A hernia occurs when part of the bowel or fatty tissue pushes through a weak area in the muscle wall. It often appears as a bulge that grows when coughing or lifting. Some hernias cause pain; others are painless.

Hernias do not heal on their own. Repair prevents enlargement and the risk of strangulation, where blood supply to trapped tissue is cut off. Mesh repair lowers the chance of the hernia returning.

Approaches: standard, keyhole (laparoscopic) or robotic

Open repair through a cut over the hernia is effective, can be done under local anaesthesia and suits many single groin or navel hernias. Keyhole and robotic repairs place mesh from inside, often with less pain and faster return to activity, and suit both-sided or recurrent groin hernias and many incisional hernias. The surgeon recommends based on hernia type and your health.

Who needs hernia repair

  • Inguinal (groin) hernias causing symptoms
  • Umbilical or paraumbilical hernias
  • Incisional hernias after previous surgery
  • Femoral hernias, which have higher strangulation risk
  • Hernias that are painful, enlarging or hard to push back

How it is done

  1. Anaesthesia is given (general, spinal or local depending on hernia type).
  2. The hernia is reached through an open cut or keyhole ports.
  3. The hernia sac is pushed back or removed.
  4. The weak area is reinforced with mesh.
  5. The mesh is fixed with stitches, tacks or glue.
  6. The wounds are closed.

Frequently asked questions

Do all hernias need surgery?

Not always. Small, painless groin hernias in men can sometimes be watched safely. Femoral and painful hernias are usually repaired.

Is hernia mesh safe?

Mesh is widely used and lowers the chance of the hernia returning. Problems such as infection or chronic pain are uncommon. Ask your surgeon which mesh is used and why.

What does strangulation mean?

Strangulation is when trapped bowel loses its blood supply. It causes severe pain, vomiting and a hard, tender lump. It is an emergency needing immediate care.

Can hernias on both sides be fixed together?

Yes. Keyhole and robotic methods can repair both groin sides through the same small cuts. Open repair of both sides is also possible.

When can I fly after hernia repair?

Most patients can fly within about a week after a simple repair. Large incisional repairs may need longer. Ask for help lifting luggage.
