Lithotripsy
Quick answer
Lithotripsy is the breaking of kidney or urinary stones into small pieces so they can pass or be removed. Shock wave lithotripsy works from outside the body, while laser lithotripsy uses a scope inside the urinary tract. A temporary stent may be left in the ureter afterwards. Stone fragments may pass over days.

Why it matters: If a stent is left in, make sure you know when and where it will be removed after you go home.
