Urethroplasty in India

Quick answer

Urethroplasty is open surgery that repairs a narrowed urethra, either by removing the scarred part and joining the ends or by widening it with a graft, often from the inner cheek. It suits men with long or recurrent strictures. Hospital stay is a few days, with a catheter for some weeks.

A urethral stricture is a scar that narrows the tube carrying urine from the bladder. It can follow injury, infection, catheter use or earlier surgery. Symptoms include a weak stream, straining and infections.

Repeated dilation or internal cutting often gives only short-term relief. Urethroplasty offers a more lasting result. Excision and primary anastomosis suit short strictures. Buccal mucosa grafts (tissue from inside the cheek) are used for longer ones.

Who needs urethroplasty

  • Strictures that returned after dilation or urethrotomy
  • Long strictures
  • Strictures after pelvic fracture injury
  • Strictures caused by lichen sclerosus
  • Men relying on a suprapubic catheter due to stricture

How it is done

  1. The patient is put to sleep or numbed from the waist down.
  2. An incision is made in the perineum (the area between scrotum and anus) or penis.
  3. The stricture is exposed.
  4. Short strictures are removed and ends rejoined; longer ones are opened and a graft is added.
  5. If a cheek graft is used, it is harvested and the mouth wound is closed.
  6. A catheter is left in place.

Frequently asked questions

Why not keep having dilations?

Dilations often only work for a short time. Repeated procedures can make the stricture longer. Urethroplasty offers a more lasting repair.

Will a cheek graft affect my mouth?

Mouth soreness is common for a short time. Eating and speaking usually return to normal quickly.

How long will I have a catheter?

Usually a few weeks. Removal follows a dye test.

Can the stricture return?

Yes, but less often than after dilation. Follow-up helps catch it early.

Should I stay in India until the catheter comes out?

Many patients do, to complete the dye test with their surgeon. Others go home with the catheter. Discuss this before travel.
