Shoulder Replacement in India

Quick answer

Shoulder replacement replaces the worn ball and socket of the shoulder with artificial parts. An anatomic design copies normal shape, while a reverse design swaps ball and socket for shoulders with large rotator cuff tears. It is for painful arthritis or cuff damage. Overseas patients usually stay in India around two weeks.

Shoulder arthritis causes deep aching pain, night pain and loss of reach, making it hard to dress, comb hair or lift objects. When the rotator cuff tendons are healthy, an anatomic replacement restores the joint surfaces. When the cuff is badly torn, a reverse shoulder replacement lets the deltoid muscle lift the arm instead.

The arm is kept in a sling for some weeks after surgery. A staged physiotherapy programme first protects the repair, then restores movement, then builds strength. Most people gain good pain relief, and many improve their ability to lift the arm.

Who needs shoulder replacement

  • Shoulder osteoarthritis with an intact rotator cuff
  • Cuff tear arthropathy (arthritis after a massive cuff tear)
  • Large, irreparable rotator cuff tears causing pseudoparalysis (inability to lift the arm)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis of the shoulder
  • Complex fractures of the upper arm bone in older adults
  • Avascular necrosis of the humeral head

How it is done

  1. CT scans assess bone shape and socket wear, and some centres use 3D planning.
  2. General anaesthesia is combined with a nerve block to numb the arm.
  3. A cut at the front of the shoulder gives access between the chest and shoulder muscles.
  4. The damaged humeral head is removed and a stem with a ball or socket is fitted.
  5. The glenoid (socket) is prepared and resurfaced, or a baseplate and ball are attached in a reverse design.
  6. Tendons are repaired and the arm is placed in a sling.

Before you travel to India

  • Send shoulder X-rays, CT scan and MRI if done.
  • Describe how high you can lift the arm and any weakness.
  • Plan for help with dressing, bathing and meals while the arm is in a sling.
  • Book help with luggage for the return journey.

Recovery and flying home

  • Hospital stay is usually a few days.
  • A sling is worn for several weeks.
  • Gentle movement exercises start early under a physiotherapist.
  • Flying is usually possible once the wound is checked, around two weeks.
  • Strength and range continue to improve for many months.

Risks

  • Dislocation, especially with reverse designs in the early weeks
  • Infection
  • Nerve injury causing arm numbness or weakness
  • Loosening of the socket component over time
  • Fracture around the implant

Alternatives

  • Steroid injections and physiotherapy for milder arthritis
  • Arthroscopic debridement, for selected younger patients
  • Tendon transfer, for some irreparable cuff tears
  • Hemiarthroplasty, replacing only the ball

Frequently asked questions

What is a reverse shoulder replacement?

It places the ball on the socket side and the socket on the arm bone. This lets the deltoid muscle lift the arm when the rotator cuff is torn. It is commonly used for older patients with cuff damage.

How long will I wear a sling?

Usually several weeks, depending on the implant and tendon repair. Your surgeon gives exact guidance. You remove it for exercises.

Will I be able to lift my arm above my head?

Many patients regain useful overhead reach, though not always full movement. Results depend on muscles and the implant. Physiotherapy helps.

Can I sleep normally after shoulder replacement?

Night pain often improves soon after surgery. Early on, sleeping propped up is easier. Pillows help support the arm.

What help will an international patient need after shoulder surgery?

You will have one arm in a sling, so an attendant is important. Help with luggage and dressing is needed. Exercise plans continue at home.
