Scoliosis Correction Surgery in India

Quick answer

Scoliosis correction surgery straightens a sideways-curved spine and fuses the corrected section with screws and rods. It is usually advised for large or worsening curves in teenagers and adults. Most patients stay in hospital for about a week, then remain in India for a few more weeks before flying home.

Scoliosis means the spine bends to the side and often twists as well. Small curves only need watching. Larger curves can change body shape, press on the lungs, or cause back pain. Surgery aims to stop the curve getting worse and to improve balance and posture.

The standard operation is called spinal fusion (joining several bones of the spine so they heal as one solid piece). The surgeon places screws in the spine bones, attaches metal rods, and gently corrects the curve. Bone graft is laid along the spine so it grows together over the following months. A spine surgeon decides how many levels to fuse after studying full-length X-rays.

Approaches: standard, navigation-guided

Most scoliosis correction is done through an open incision along the back, which gives the surgeon a full view for placing screws. Some centres use computer navigation or robotic guidance during the same open operation to help position screws more precisely, which can suit stiff curves or unusual anatomy. Your spine surgeon will advise which technique fits your curve and the hospital's equipment.

Who needs scoliosis correction surgery

  • Teenagers with idiopathic scoliosis (no known cause) whose curve keeps growing despite bracing
  • Adults with a large curve that causes back pain, leg pain or a visible tilt of the trunk
  • Children with scoliosis linked to nerve or muscle conditions such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
  • Patients whose curve is affecting breathing or heart function
  • People with congenital scoliosis caused by abnormally formed spine bones
  • Adults with degenerative scoliosis from worn spinal discs and joints

How it is done

  1. General anaesthesia is given and the patient lies face down on a padded frame.
  2. Nerve monitoring wires are attached so the team can check spinal cord function throughout the operation.
  3. An incision is made along the middle of the back and the muscles are moved aside to expose the spine.
  4. Screws are placed into the selected vertebrae (spine bones).
  5. Rods are shaped, fixed to the screws and turned to straighten and de-rotate the curve.
  6. Bone graft is placed along the fused section and the wound is closed in layers.

Before you travel to India

  • Full-length standing X-rays of the spine taken from the front and side
  • MRI of the spine if there is any back pain, nerve symptoms or an unusual curve pattern
  • Lung function tests and a heart check for large curves or curves linked to nerve conditions
  • A list of current medicines, including any blood thinners or supplements
  • Plan for at least one adult attendant, as walking and self-care need help in the first weeks

Recovery and flying home

  • Hospital stay is usually around a week, sometimes longer for complex curves
  • Walking with support begins within a day or two after surgery
  • Most patients stay in India for a few weeks so the surgeon can check the wound and X-rays before the flight home
  • School or desk work usually resumes after several weeks, while sport and heavy lifting wait for many months
  • The fused bones take months to become solid, so follow-up X-rays continue after returning home

Risks

  • Bleeding that may need a blood transfusion
  • Wound infection
  • Nerve or spinal cord injury, which is uncommon but serious
  • Screws or rods loosening or breaking over time
  • Failure of the bones to fuse fully, which may need another operation
  • Wear and pain in the spine levels next to the fusion in later years

Alternatives

  • Observation with regular X-rays, for small curves that are not progressing
  • Bracing, for growing children with moderate curves
  • Vertebral body tethering, a growth-guided option for selected children who still have growth left
  • Growing rods, for young children whose spine still needs to lengthen

Frequently asked questions

How much straighter will my spine be after scoliosis surgery?

Most curves are improved a lot, but rarely made perfectly straight. Stiff, long-standing curves correct less than flexible curves in teenagers. Your surgeon can give an estimate after studying bending X-rays.

Will I lose flexibility after spinal fusion?

The fused section no longer bends, so some flexibility is lost. How much depends on how many levels are fused and where. Many people find daily movements, sitting and walking feel normal after recovery.

Can my child go back to school and sport?

Most children return to school after several weeks. Non-contact sport usually restarts after some months, once X-rays show the fusion is healing. The surgeon gives the timing for each activity.

Will the metal rods set off airport security alarms?

Spinal implants can sometimes trigger airport scanners. Carrying a discharge summary or implant card from the hospital usually resolves any questions. Ask the hospital to provide one before you leave India.

How long should an international patient plan to stay in India?

Plan for the hospital stay plus a few weeks of recovery nearby. The team needs to check the wound and repeat X-rays before clearing you to fly. Long flights also need planning for comfortable seating and breaks to walk.
