Robotic Thymectomy in India
Quick answer
Robotic thymectomy removes the thymus using robotic arms with wristed instruments controlled by a surgeon at a console, through small chest ports. It is used for myasthenia gravis and early, contained thymomas. It is available at selected Indian hospitals, and most international patients plan around one to two weeks in India.

At a glance
The thymus sits in a narrow space behind the breastbone, close to major blood vessels and the nerves that move the diaphragm. Robotic systems give the surgeon a magnified 3D view and instruments that bend inside this tight space. This can help clear fat around the gland where extra thymic tissue may hide.
The surgeon controls the robot from a console, with an assistant at the bedside. Ports are usually placed on one side of the chest. Robotic programmes are concentrated in larger private hospitals, and costs are higher than for conventional keyhole surgery.
How this approach differs
Robotic thymectomy uses the same small-port principle as VATS thymectomy but replaces straight instruments with wristed ones and adds 3D magnification. This may help with complete fat clearance and careful dissection near nerves and vessels. Recovery is similar to thoracoscopic thymectomy and generally quicker than sternotomy. Availability is limited to hospitals with robotic systems and trained teams, and cost is higher.
Who needs robotic thymectomy
- Myasthenia gravis where thymectomy is advised by a neurologist
- Early-stage thymoma without invasion
- Thymic masses in difficult positions where fine dissection is needed
- Patients at hospitals with an established robotic thoracic programme
How it is done
- Myasthenia is optimised and imaging reviewed.
- Under general anaesthesia, the chest is gently filled with carbon dioxide to create working space.
- Three or four small ports are placed, usually on one side of the chest.
- The robot is docked and the surgeon dissects the thymus and fat from the console.
- The specimen is removed in a bag.
- A small drain may be placed; you are monitored closely after waking.
Before you travel to India
- Chest CT or MRI and any biopsy reports
- Neurologist letter, antibody results and current treatment
- Lung function tests
- Confirm the hospital routinely performs robotic thymectomy
Recovery and flying home
- Hospital stay is usually short, often a few days
- Close monitoring for myasthenic weakness in the first days
- Pain is usually manageable with tablets
- Clearance to fly comes after surgical and neurology review
- Myasthenia benefit develops gradually over months or longer
Risks
- Myasthenic crisis
- Bleeding or injury to nearby vessels
- Phrenic nerve injury
- Conversion to another approach
- Longer setup and operating time in some cases
Alternatives
- VATS thymectomy with hand-held instruments
- Sternotomy for large or invasive thymomas
- Ongoing medical therapy for myasthenia

Frequently asked questions
Why choose robotic thymectomy over VATS?
Some surgeons find the 3D view and flexible instruments help in the narrow space around the thymus. Results are broadly similar in experienced hands. Your surgeon will advise based on your scan and their expertise.
Which side of my chest will the ports be on?
Many surgeons use the right or left side, depending on where the tumour sits and their preference. Some use both sides or a subxiphoid port.
Is robotic thymectomy suitable for children?
It is mostly performed in adults. Children with myasthenia or thymic masses are assessed by a paediatric team, which will advise the safest method.
How should I plan my time in India for robotic thymectomy?
Allow time for neurology review before surgery, a few days in hospital and a check before flying. Your stay depends on myasthenia control and recovery.
Will I still need medicines after surgery?
Most myasthenia patients continue medicines for some time. Doses may be reduced gradually as symptoms improve, guided by your neurologist.
