Pacemaker Implantation in India

Quick answer

Pacemaker implantation places a small battery-powered device under the skin below the collarbone, with leads to the heart, to keep the heartbeat from becoming too slow. It treats heart block and symptomatic slow heart rhythms. It takes about an hour under local anaesthetic, and most people go home within a day or two.

A pacemaker watches your heart rhythm continuously and sends tiny electrical pulses when the heart is too slow or pauses. This relieves dizziness, fainting, tiredness and breathlessness caused by a slow heartbeat.

Most pacemakers have one or two leads placed through a vein. Leadless pacemakers, small capsules placed directly in the heart via the groin, are another option for some patients. Modern devices can often be checked remotely.

Who needs pacemaker implantation

  • Complete or high-grade heart block
  • Sick sinus syndrome causing pauses or slow rates
  • Fainting or dizziness from a slow heartbeat
  • Slow atrial fibrillation with symptoms
  • Heart block after heart surgery or TAVI

How it is done

  1. Local anaesthetic is given below the collarbone, with mild sedation.
  2. A small incision creates a pocket under the skin.
  3. Leads are passed through a vein into the heart under X-ray guidance.
  4. Lead positions are tested electrically.
  5. Leads are connected to the pacemaker, which is placed in the pocket.
  6. The wound is closed and the device programmed.

Before you travel to India

  • ECGs and Holter recordings showing the slow rhythm
  • Echocardiogram
  • Blood thinner details, which may need adjusting
  • Allergy history, including to antibiotics
  • Plan a short stay plus a wound check before flying

Recovery and flying home

  • Most people go home within a day or two.
  • Arm movement on the device side is limited for a few weeks to protect leads.
  • A wound and device check is done before flying home.
  • Driving rules after a pacemaker vary by country.
  • Device checks continue regularly, in person or remotely.

Risks

  • Lead displacement needing repositioning
  • Infection of the pocket or leads
  • Bleeding or haematoma at the site
  • Collapsed lung during vein access, which is uncommon
  • Battery depletion over years needing replacement

Alternatives

  • Leadless pacemaker for selected patients
  • Stopping medicines that slow the heart, when they are the cause
  • Conduction system pacing for some patients

Frequently asked questions

How long does a pacemaker battery last?

Battery life varies by device and how often it paces. Many last for years. Replacement is a smaller procedure.

Can I use a mobile phone with a pacemaker?

Yes. Keep the phone away from directly over the device. Use it on the opposite ear.

Can I go through airport security?

Show your device card to staff. Walking through metal detectors is generally fine, but avoid lingering. Ask for a hand search if worried.

How do international patients get pacemaker checks back home?

Any cardiology clinic with the right programmer for your device brand can check it. Remote monitoring may also be possible. Check device support in your country before choosing the brand.

Can I have an MRI after a pacemaker?

Many modern systems are MRI conditional. Your device card states this. The MRI team will programme the device before scanning.
