Treatments
Ovulation induction in India
Quick answer
Ovulation induction uses tablets such as letrozole or clomiphene, or low-dose injections, to help women who do not ovulate regularly release an egg. It is often the first treatment for PCOS-related infertility. Ultrasound monitoring checks how many follicles grow, to limit the risk of twins or triplets.

At a glance
Many women with irregular cycles, especially from polycystic ovary syndrome, can conceive once ovulation is restored. Treatment is simple, but monitoring is important because the ovaries may respond strongly.
Ovulation induction can be paired with timed intercourse or IUI. International patients often do the first monitored cycle in India, then continue at home under a local gynaecologist using the same plan.
How this approach differs
Tablets are usually tried before injections. Letrozole is often preferred for PCOS in current guidelines. If several cycles fail, IUI or IVF may be advised.
Who needs ovulation induction
- Women with PCOS and irregular or absent ovulation
- Women with hypothalamic amenorrhoea (low hormones from weight, stress or exercise), using specific injections
- Women with unexplained infertility, combined with IUI
- Women with open tubes and a partner with normal semen
How it is done
- Baseline tests confirm open tubes and a normal semen analysis.
- Tablets are taken for five days early in the cycle, or injections are given daily.
- Ultrasound scans track follicle growth.
- A trigger injection may be given once a follicle is mature.
- Intercourse or IUI is timed for ovulation.
- A pregnancy test follows about two weeks later.

Frequently asked questions
Letrozole or clomiphene: which is used?
Many specialists now prefer letrozole for women with PCOS. Your doctor chooses based on your history and response.
How many cycles should I try?
Many specialists suggest several monitored cycles before moving to IVF. The exact number depends on age and other factors.
Why do I need scans if I'm just taking tablets?
Scans show how many follicles grow. Too many raises the risk of multiple pregnancy, and the cycle may be cancelled.
