MitraClip in India
Quick answer
MitraClip is a catheter procedure that clips together the leaflets of a leaking mitral valve to reduce backflow. It is reached through a vein in the groin, so no chest incision is needed. It suits people with severe mitral regurgitation who are at high risk for surgery. Many patients go home within days.

At a glance
This method is known as transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER). A small clip grasps the front and back leaflets where they fail to meet, creating a double opening that leaks much less.
It is used for degenerative leaks in patients too frail for surgery, and for secondary (functional) leaks caused by a weakened, enlarged heart in selected heart failure patients. A heart team decides on suitability using transoesophageal echocardiography.
Who needs mitraclip
- Severe degenerative mitral regurgitation with high surgical risk
- Severe secondary mitral regurgitation with heart failure despite medicines
- Older adults with breathlessness from a leaking mitral valve
- Patients with suitable leaflet anatomy on transoesophageal echo
- Those not suitable for open or minimally invasive repair
How it is done
- General anaesthesia or deep sedation is given, with a transoesophageal echo probe placed.
- A catheter enters the groin vein and travels to the right atrium.
- A small puncture is made across the wall into the left atrium (transseptal puncture).
- The clip is steered to the mitral valve and positioned at the leak.
- The leaflets are grasped and the clip is closed; more clips may be added.
- Once the leak is reduced, the clip is released and the catheter withdrawn.
Before you travel to India
- Transoesophageal echocardiogram images of the mitral valve
- Heart failure history and current medicines
- Kidney function and blood count
- Assessment of frailty and other illnesses from your doctor
- A carer, as many candidates are older
Recovery and flying home
- Most patients stay in hospital for a short period.
- Breathlessness may improve soon after.
- Air travel is often possible within about a week after a review echo.
- Heart failure medicines continue.
- Follow-up echos monitor the valve.
Risks
- Partial clip detachment
- Residual or recurrent leak
- Narrowing of the mitral valve opening
- Bleeding or vein injury in the groin
- Small residual hole in the atrial wall
Alternatives
- Surgical mitral valve repair or replacement
- Optimised heart failure medicines and CRT
- Transcatheter mitral valve replacement in trials or selected centres

Frequently asked questions
Does MitraClip stop the leak completely?
It usually reduces the leak significantly but may not remove it entirely. The aim is better symptoms and heart function. Results depend on valve anatomy.
Who is better served by surgery?
Fitter patients with repairable degenerative valves often get more complete, durable results from surgical repair. MitraClip is generally for those at higher surgical risk. The heart team advises.
Can MitraClip be redone?
Additional clips can sometimes be added later. Surgery or other catheter options may also be possible. Each case is assessed individually.
Is MitraClip available for international patients in India?
Yes, at a number of advanced cardiac centres. Send your transoesophageal echo images so the team can check suitability. We confirm device availability for your dates.
Will I still need my heart failure tablets?
Yes, most patients continue their medicines. MitraClip reduces the leak but does not cure heart failure. Your cardiologist may adjust doses.
