Mini Gastric Bypass in India
Quick answer
Mini gastric bypass, or one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB), makes a long, narrow stomach pouch joined to the small intestine with a single connection. It suits adults with severe obesity, including many with diabetes. Hospital stay is usually a few days, with most patients flying home in about two weeks.

Unlike the classic Roux-en-Y bypass, OAGB uses one join between the stomach pouch and a loop of small intestine. This makes the operation shorter and technically simpler. It still bypasses a length of intestine, so it reduces both food intake and absorption.
OAGB has become popular in India, the Middle East and Europe. Because bile can flow back into the pouch, some patients develop bile reflux. Long-term vitamin and protein monitoring is especially important with this operation.
Who needs mini gastric bypass
- Severe obesity meeting bariatric surgery criteria
- Obesity with type 2 diabetes
- Patients with very high BMI where a shorter operation is preferred
- Weight regain after an earlier sleeve, in selected cases
- Patients without significant existing reflux
How it is done
- General anaesthesia is given and keyhole ports are placed.
- A long, narrow pouch is stapled from the stomach.
- The surgeon measures a set length of small intestine from its start.
- That loop of intestine is brought up and joined to the end of the pouch.
- The join is checked for leaks.
- Ports are removed and the small cuts closed.
Before you travel to India
- Endoscopy if you have heartburn, since reflux can affect suitability
- Blood tests for iron, B12, vitamin D, albumin (protein) and HbA1c
- Medication list, including diabetes drugs
- A companion for the first days after surgery
Recovery and flying home
- Most patients spend a few days in hospital.
- The diet moves from liquids to soft food over several weeks.
- A review before travel usually happens in the second week.
- Protein intake must be watched closely to avoid deficiency.
- Lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements are required.
Risks
- Bile reflux into the stomach pouch or oesophagus
- Leak or bleeding at the join
- Marginal ulcer
- Protein, iron or vitamin deficiency
- Diarrhoea or loose stools
- Need for revision to Roux-en-Y bypass if bile reflux is severe
Alternatives
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: two joins, lower bile reflux risk
- Sleeve gastrectomy: no bowel bypass
- Intragastric balloon: temporary option
- Medical weight management

Frequently asked questions
How is mini gastric bypass different from regular gastric bypass?
It has one bowel join instead of two. The stomach pouch is longer and narrower. This makes surgery shorter but raises the chance of bile reflux.
Is mini gastric bypass really 'mini'?
The name refers to the single join, not a smaller effect. It is a major operation with significant weight-loss and metabolic effects. Treat it as seriously as any bypass.
What is bile reflux and how is it treated?
Bile from the intestine can flow back into the pouch, causing burning or vomiting. Medicines can help mild cases. Severe cases may need conversion to a Roux-en-Y bypass.
Do I need more supplements than after a sleeve?
Usually yes, because part of the intestine is bypassed. Protein, iron, B12, calcium and vitamin D need close monitoring. Your dietitian sets a supplement plan.
Can I get follow-up tests done in my home country?
Yes. Routine blood tests can be done locally. Share results with your Indian team at agreed intervals for advice.
