Meniscus Repair in India

Quick answer

Meniscus repair stitches a torn meniscus, the knee's cartilage shock absorber, so it can heal. It is done by keyhole surgery and suits mainly younger people with tears in areas that have good blood supply. Many international patients can fly home within about a week, with a protected rehabilitation period after.

Each knee has two C-shaped menisci that spread load and protect joint cartilage. Tears cause pain, swelling, catching or locking. Saving the meniscus helps lower the long-term risk of arthritis compared with removing torn pieces.

Whether a tear can be repaired depends on its location, pattern and the tissue quality. Tears near the outer edge, where blood supply is better, heal best. Root tears and bucket-handle tears may also be repairable in experienced hands.

Who needs meniscus repair

  • Tears in the outer, well-supplied zone of the meniscus
  • Bucket-handle tears causing the knee to lock
  • Meniscal root tears in knees without significant arthritis
  • Tears found together with an ACL injury
  • Younger, active patients with repairable tissue

How it is done

  1. MRI identifies the tear type and location.
  2. Keyhole surgery is performed through small cuts at the front of the knee.
  3. Tear edges are freshened to encourage healing.
  4. Stitches are placed with all-inside devices or inside-out techniques.
  5. Root tears are reattached through a small tunnel in the shin bone.
  6. The knee may be placed in a brace.

Before you travel to India

  • Send the knee MRI and a description of locking or giving way.
  • Share details of any previous knee surgery.
  • Plan to use crutches and possibly a brace.
  • Arrange an aisle seat to keep the knee straight on the flight.

Recovery and flying home

  • Usually day surgery or an overnight stay.
  • Weight bearing and bending may be limited for some weeks to protect the stitches.
  • Flying is often possible after about a week.
  • Sport usually resumes after several months.

Risks

  • Failure of the repair to heal, needing further surgery
  • Stiffness
  • Nerve irritation from stitches
  • Infection or clots

Alternatives

  • Partial meniscectomy (trimming the torn part), for unrepairable tears
  • Physiotherapy for stable, degenerative tears
  • Meniscus transplant, for selected young patients after previous removal

Frequently asked questions

Why repair the meniscus rather than remove it?

The meniscus protects knee cartilage. Keeping it may lower arthritis risk. Repair is chosen when healing is likely.

Can all meniscus tears be repaired?

No. Some tears are frayed or in areas with poor blood supply. These may be trimmed instead. The surgeon decides during arthroscopy.

Why is recovery longer than after trimming?

Stitches need time to heal, so movement is protected. Trimming allows quicker return. Repair aims for better long-term knee health.

Will I need a brace?

Some surgeons use a brace for a few weeks. It limits bending while the repair heals. Your surgeon will advise.

Can an international patient fly soon after meniscus repair?

Often within about a week, if swelling is controlled. Use clot precautions on the flight. Keep the knee supported.
