Leukaemia Treatment in India

Quick answer

Leukaemia treatment uses chemotherapy, targeted drugs, immunotherapy and sometimes a bone marrow transplant to control cancer of the blood-forming cells. It suits children and adults with acute or chronic leukaemia. Acute leukaemia usually needs a stay in India of several months, while chronic types may need only a short visit to start treatment.

Leukaemia is a cancer that starts in the bone marrow, where blood cells are made. Abnormal white cells crowd out healthy ones, which leads to infections, tiredness and easy bleeding. Treatment depends on the exact type: acute myeloid (AML), acute lymphoblastic (ALL), chronic myeloid (CML) or chronic lymphocytic (CLL).

In India, leukaemia care is led by haematologists (blood specialists) in units with sterile rooms, a blood bank and genetic testing labs. Before starting, the team tests the marrow for gene changes, because these decide which drugs work and whether a transplant is needed later. Many plans combine phases: induction to clear the disease, consolidation to deepen the response, and maintenance or a transplant to keep it away.

Who needs leukaemia treatment

  • Newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) or acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL)
  • Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) that needs targeted tablets or has stopped responding to them
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) causing symptoms, swollen glands or low blood counts
  • Leukaemia that has come back (relapsed) after earlier treatment
  • Patients whose genetic results show high risk and who may need a transplant
  • Children with leukaemia who need care in a paediatric haemato-oncology unit

How it is done

  1. Diagnosis is confirmed with blood tests, a bone marrow biopsy, flow cytometry and genetic (cytogenetic and molecular) tests.
  2. A central line or PICC line (a thin long-term tube in a vein) is placed for drugs and blood draws.
  3. Induction chemotherapy or targeted therapy starts, often as an inpatient, to bring the leukaemia into remission.
  4. Supportive care runs alongside: blood and platelet transfusions, antibiotics and infection precautions.
  5. A repeat marrow test checks remission and measurable residual disease (tiny traces of leukaemia).
  6. Consolidation cycles follow, and higher-risk patients are assessed for a stem cell transplant.
  7. Chronic types often continue on daily tablets with regular blood monitoring at home.

Before you travel to India

  • Send your full blood count, peripheral smear, bone marrow biopsy report and any flow cytometry or genetic results.
  • Share a list of all chemotherapy or targeted drugs already given, with dates and doses.
  • Ask your doctor to confirm you are stable enough for a flight, as very low counts raise infection and bleeding risk.
  • Plan for at least one healthy adult attendant who can stay for the whole treatment period.
  • If a transplant may be needed, bring siblings for HLA tissue typing or send their samples early.

Recovery and flying home

  • Induction for acute leukaemia usually means several weeks in hospital while blood counts recover.
  • Most families stay near the hospital between cycles for outpatient checks and transfusions.
  • Patients with chronic leukaemia can often return home after starting tablets, with tests by a local doctor.
  • Energy returns slowly; infection precautions continue for weeks after each cycle.
  • Long-term follow-up includes marrow or molecular tests to watch for any return of disease.

Risks

  • Serious infections while white blood cell counts are low
  • Bleeding or the need for frequent platelet transfusions
  • Nausea, mouth sores, hair loss and tiredness from chemotherapy
  • Tumour lysis syndrome, where fast cell breakdown strains the kidneys
  • Heart, liver or fertility effects from some drugs
  • Relapse of leukaemia after an initial good response

Alternatives

  • Stem cell (bone marrow) transplant, for higher-risk or relapsed disease
  • CAR T-cell therapy, for certain relapsed B-cell leukaemias
  • Clinical trials of newer drugs, where eligible
  • Watchful waiting, for early chronic lymphocytic leukaemia without symptoms

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need genetic tests before leukaemia treatment starts?

Gene changes in the leukaemia cells decide which drugs are likely to work. They also show whether the disease is low or high risk. High-risk results may mean a transplant is planned early.

Can chronic myeloid leukaemia be treated with tablets alone?

Many people with CML are managed with daily targeted tablets called tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Regular blood tests check how well the tablets are working. A specialist decides if and when the drug should change.

How long will I stay in India for acute leukaemia?

Acute leukaemia care is usually measured in months, not weeks. Induction alone needs a hospital stay, and further cycles follow. Your haematologist will give a plan once the type and risk group are known.

Can my child continue maintenance therapy back home?

For childhood ALL, the long maintenance phase is often taken as tablets at home. The Indian team usually shares a written schedule with your local doctor. Regular blood tests near home are still needed.

As an international patient, can I start leukaemia treatment quickly after arriving?

If your reports are sent in advance, the team can often plan admission soon after arrival. Some tests are repeated locally to confirm the type. Very sick patients are usually admitted on the first day.
