Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy in India

Quick answer

Laparoscopic adrenalectomy removes an adrenal gland through small keyhole cuts using a camera and long instruments. It is the usual approach for benign hormone-producing or non-functioning adrenal tumours of small to moderate size. It is widely available in India; most patients go home within a few days and stay in India about a week.

Endocrinology and Endocrine SurgerySpecialty

Two keyhole routes are used. In the transabdominal route, you lie on your side and the surgeon reaches the adrenal through the abdomen. In the posterior retroperitoneoscopic route, you lie face down and the surgeon approaches from the back, avoiding the abdominal organs.

Compared with open surgery, keyhole adrenalectomy usually means less pain, smaller scars and quicker return to normal activity. Surgeons experienced in this technique choose the route based on tumour size, side, body build and previous surgery.

How this approach differs

Compared with open adrenalectomy, the gland is removed through small ports rather than a long abdominal or flank cut, so pain and hospital stay are usually less. The posterior approach avoids the abdominal cavity and suits smaller tumours and people with previous abdominal surgery. Large or invasive tumours may still need open surgery. Keyhole adrenalectomy is widely practised in Indian endocrine and urology centres.

Who needs laparoscopic adrenalectomy

  • Benign adrenal adenomas causing Conn's or Cushing's syndrome
  • Phaeochromocytomas of manageable size after medical preparation
  • Non-functioning adrenal masses that are growing or larger in size
  • Selected patients with both adrenals affected

How it is done

  1. Hormone and imaging studies are completed; medicines prepare you if needed.
  2. General anaesthesia is given; you are positioned on your side or face down.
  3. Three or four small ports are placed.
  4. The surgeon identifies and clips the adrenal vein early, especially in phaeochromocytoma.
  5. The gland is freed and removed in a bag.
  6. Ports are closed; most patients walk the same or next day.

Before you travel to India

  • Previous abdominal surgery details

Recovery and flying home

  • Hospital stay is often one to three days
  • Pain is usually controlled with tablets
  • Blood pressure and potassium are monitored
  • Flying is usually possible within days of discharge
  • Endocrinology follow-up checks hormone levels

Risks

  • Bleeding
  • Blood pressure swings
  • Temporary adrenal insufficiency
  • Conversion to open surgery

Alternatives

  • Robotic adrenalectomy
  • Open adrenalectomy for large or malignant tumours

Frequently asked questions

Front or back approach, which will I have?

It depends on tumour size, side, your build and the surgeon's experience. Both are effective in skilled hands.

Can large tumours be removed laparoscopically?

Some moderately large benign tumours can. Very large or suspected cancers often need open surgery.

How soon can I work again?

Many people return to light work within a couple of weeks. Heavy lifting waits a little longer.

How long should I stay in India after laparoscopic adrenalectomy?

Most patients are discharged within a few days. Many fly home about a week after surgery, once hormone results and the medicine plan are clear.

Will I have scars?

You will have a few small scars on the abdomen or back. They usually fade well.
