IVM IVF in India

Quick answer

In vitro maturation (IVM) collects immature eggs from small follicles and lets them mature in the laboratory for one to two days before fertilisation. It needs little or no hormone stimulation, so the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation is very low. It is offered at fewer clinics because the lab work is specialised.

At a glance

Fertility and IVFSpecialty

Conventional IVF matures eggs inside the ovary with daily injections. IVM moves that maturing step into the lab. This is useful for women whose ovaries over-respond to hormones, such as many women with polycystic ovaries.

IVM is also used in fertility preservation when there is no time for full stimulation, for example before urgent cancer treatment. Success rates vary widely between laboratories, so the clinic's own experience matters.

How this approach differs

The key difference from standard IVF is where egg maturation happens. IVM spares the ovaries from strong stimulation but usually yields fewer usable embryos per cycle. Ask how many IVM cycles the laboratory performs each year.

Who needs ivm

  • Women with polycystic ovary syndrome at high risk of hyperstimulation
  • Women who need fertility preservation urgently
  • Women with hormone-sensitive cancers where stimulation is undesirable
  • Rare cases of eggs failing to mature in previous IVF cycles

How it is done

  1. Scans early in the cycle count small follicles.
  2. A short course of low-dose hormone may be given, depending on the protocol.
  3. Immature eggs are aspirated from small follicles under sedation.
  4. Eggs are placed in maturation medium for 24 to 48 hours.
  5. Mature eggs are fertilised, usually by ICSI.
  6. Embryos are transferred or frozen for a later transfer.

Before you travel to India

  • Ultrasound reports describing your ovaries and follicle count
  • Hormone tests including AMH
  • Records of any previous hyperstimulation or poor egg maturation
  • About ten days in India for a cycle with frozen embryos, longer with a fresh transfer

Recovery and flying home

  • Collection may feel slightly more uncomfortable than standard IVF because follicles are small.
  • Most women resume normal activity the next day.
  • Many clinics freeze embryos and plan a later frozen transfer.
  • Pregnancy follow-up is the same as after any IVF pregnancy.

Risks

  • Fewer eggs maturing than expected
  • Lower embryo numbers than conventional IVF
  • Limited availability and variable lab experience
  • General risks of egg collection such as bleeding or infection

Alternatives

  • Conventional IVF with an antagonist protocol and freeze-all to reduce hyperstimulation risk
  • Mini IVF
  • Ovulation induction with timed intercourse or IUI for PCOS

Frequently asked questions

Is IVM safe for babies?

Follow-up studies so far have been reassuring, but long-term data are more limited than for conventional IVF. Discuss current evidence with your specialist.

Why is IVM suggested for PCOS?

Women with PCOS often have many follicles and over-respond to injections. IVM avoids strong stimulation, so hyperstimulation risk drops sharply.

Do all IVF clinics in India offer IVM?

No. It needs specialised culture skills and is available at a smaller number of laboratories.
