IVF Treatment in India
Quick answer
IVF (in vitro fertilisation) collects eggs from the ovaries, fertilises them with sperm in a laboratory, and places a resulting embryo in the uterus. It helps couples with blocked tubes, low sperm count, endometriosis or unexplained infertility. A full cycle usually means staying in India for several weeks.

IVF begins with hormone injections that help the ovaries grow several eggs. These are collected in a short procedure under sedation. In the laboratory, eggs and sperm are combined, and the embryos grow for a few days.
One embryo (sometimes two) is transferred into the uterus. Extra good-quality embryos can be frozen for later use. The chance of pregnancy depends strongly on the woman's age, egg quality and the cause of infertility, so your specialist will discuss realistic expectations.
Who needs ivf treatment
- Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Male factor infertility, often combined with ICSI
- Endometriosis affecting fertility
- Unexplained infertility after other treatments
- Low ovarian reserve or older maternal age
- Couples needing genetic testing of embryos
How it is done
- Baseline scans and blood tests on day two or three of the cycle.
- Daily hormone injections stimulate the ovaries, with scans to track follicles.
- A trigger injection prepares eggs for collection.
- Eggs are collected through the vagina with a fine needle under sedation.
- Eggs are fertilised in the lab, and embryos are grown for several days.
- An embryo is transferred into the uterus with a soft catheter, then a pregnancy test follows about two weeks later.
Before you travel to India
- AMH, FSH and thyroid blood tests for the woman
- Semen analysis for the male partner
- Records of previous IVF cycles, including medicines and embryo reports
- HIV, hepatitis B and C screening for both partners
- Plan for the male partner to be present for sperm collection, or arrange frozen sperm
Recovery and flying home
- Egg collection is a day procedure; you go home within hours.
- Mild cramps and bloating are common for a few days.
- Light activity is fine after embryo transfer; bed rest is not needed.
- Many couples stay until transfer and fly home during the two-week wait.
- A pregnancy blood test can be done at home and shared with the clinic.
Risks
- Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS): swollen, painful ovaries
- Multiple pregnancy if more than one embryo is transferred
- Ectopic pregnancy (outside the womb)
- Bleeding or infection after egg collection (uncommon)
- Emotional stress if the cycle does not succeed
Alternatives
- IUI: sperm placed in the uterus, for milder infertility
- Ovulation induction with tablets or injections
- Donor egg IVF when egg quality is low
- Surgery for tubal problems or endometriosis

Frequently asked questions
How long do I need to stay in India for IVF?
Most couples plan for several weeks, covering stimulation, egg collection and transfer. Some start injections at home under guidance. The clinic will give you a day-by-day plan.
Can I start IVF injections in my home country?
Often yes, with remote monitoring and local scans. You then travel for egg collection and transfer. This reduces time spent in India.
What is a frozen embryo transfer?
Embryos are frozen after the IVF cycle and transferred in a later cycle. This can be better if hormone levels are high or the lining is not ready. You might return to India for it.
Does my husband need to travel too?
Usually yes, to give a fresh sample. Sperm can also be frozen in advance at the clinic. Legal consents from both partners are required in India.
What happens to extra embryos?
Good-quality spare embryos can be frozen for future use. Indian law regulates storage and use. You will sign consent forms covering this.
