Hysteroscopic septum resection in India
Quick answer
A uterine septum is a band of tissue that divides the inside of the womb, present from birth. Hysteroscopic resection removes it with a thin camera passed through the cervix, without any cut on the abdomen. It may be advised for women with recurrent miscarriage, and specialists debate its value when infertility is the only problem.

At a glance
The septum forms when the two halves of the developing uterus do not fully merge. It may be partial or complete. 3D ultrasound or MRI helps distinguish a septate uterus from other shapes, such as a bicornuate uterus, which is not treated this way.
During resection the surgeon cuts the septum with fine scissors, an electric loop or a laser until the cavity looks normal. Because it is day surgery, many international patients can combine it with an IVF trip, leaving a gap before embryo transfer.
How this approach differs
Surgery through the cervix avoids scars on the uterine wall, so a later caesarean is not automatically needed. A combined laparoscopy may be added if diagnosis is uncertain. International guidance on operating for infertility alone is not settled, so ask your specialist how they weigh it.
Who needs hysteroscopic septum resection
- Women with a septate uterus and two or more miscarriages
- Women with a septum and previous preterm birth or abnormal baby position
- Selected women with a septum before IVF, after discussion of evidence
How it is done
- A 3D ultrasound or MRI confirms the septum and its depth.
- Surgery is done in the first half of the cycle under general or spinal anaesthesia.
- The hysteroscope is passed through the cervix and the uterus is filled with fluid.
- The septum is divided carefully from its tip towards the top of the uterus.
- The procedure usually takes under an hour; you go home the same day.
- A repeat scan or office hysteroscopy may check the result after a few weeks.
Before you travel to India
- 3D ultrasound or MRI images and report
- Records of past miscarriages or pregnancy outcomes
- Plan to arrive in the first half of your cycle
- Allow a wait of usually one to three months before an embryo transfer
Recovery and flying home
- Mild cramps and spotting for a few days are common.
- Most women return to normal activity in one to two days.
- Flying home is usually possible within a few days.
- Your doctor may prescribe hormones to help the lining heal.
Risks
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Perforation of the uterus, which is uncommon
- Scarring inside the uterus (adhesions)
- Fluid overload from the distension fluid, monitored during surgery
Alternatives
- No surgery, with close monitoring in any pregnancy
- Combined hysteroscopy and laparoscopy when the uterine shape is unclear
- Cervical length monitoring in pregnancy for women with a history of preterm birth

Frequently asked questions
Does septum removal affect a future delivery?
Hysteroscopic resection does not cut the outer wall of the uterus, so normal delivery is often possible. Your obstetrician decides based on the pregnancy.
How soon can I try to conceive after surgery?
Many specialists suggest waiting one to three months for the lining to heal. Your surgeon will advise based on the extent of the septum.
Is a septum the same as a bicornuate uterus?
No. A bicornuate uterus has a heart shape outside as well and is not treated by hysteroscopic resection. Imaging tells the two apart.
