Total Hip Replacement in India

Quick answer

Total hip replacement swaps a damaged hip ball and socket for an artificial joint made of metal, ceramic or plastic parts. It helps people with hip arthritis or avascular necrosis whose pain and stiffness limit daily life. Most international patients remain in India for about two weeks after surgery.

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. Arthritis, loss of blood supply to the ball (avascular necrosis), childhood hip problems or old fractures can destroy its smooth surfaces. The operation replaces the socket with a cup and the ball with a head on a stem fitted into the thigh bone.

Implants may be fixed with bone cement or pressed into the bone so it grows onto them. Bearing choices include ceramic-on-polyethylene and metal-on-polyethylene. In India, avascular necrosis is a common reason for hip replacement in younger adults.

Approaches: standard, minimally invasive or robotic

Standard hip replacement uses a posterior or lateral cut of usual length, giving the surgeon a full view for complex hips. Minimally invasive approaches, such as the direct anterior route, use smaller cuts and work between muscles, which may speed early recovery in suitable patients. Robotic systems add 3D planning and guided cup positioning. Your surgeon chooses based on anatomy and experience.

Who needs total hip replacement

  • Hip osteoarthritis with severe groin or thigh pain
  • Avascular necrosis with collapse of the femoral head
  • Rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis affecting the hip
  • Arthritis after childhood hip dysplasia or Perthes disease
  • Failed fixation of a hip fracture
  • Hip stiffness that makes walking, sitting or putting on shoes difficult

How it is done

  1. Spinal or general anaesthesia is given.
  2. The hip is reached through a cut at the back, side or front of the hip.
  3. The worn femoral head is removed.
  4. The socket is shaped and a new cup is fitted.
  5. The thigh bone canal is prepared and a stem with a new ball is inserted.
  6. Leg length and stability are checked before closure.

Before you travel to India

  • Send pelvis and hip X-rays, and MRI if avascular necrosis is suspected.
  • Share blood tests, heart checks and diabetes control.
  • Treat dental or skin infections before travel.
  • Bring an attendant for help with dressing and walking.

Recovery and flying home

  • Patients usually walk with support on the first day.
  • Most patients are discharged after a few days in hospital.
  • Flying home is commonly possible around two weeks after surgery.
  • Hip precautions may be advised for some weeks depending on approach.
  • Most people return to normal routines within a few months.

Risks

  • Dislocation of the new hip
  • Leg length difference
  • Blood clots
  • Infection
  • Fracture around the implant during or after surgery

Alternatives

  • Hip resurfacing, for some younger men with good bone
  • Core decompression, for early avascular necrosis
  • Physiotherapy, pain relief and walking aids

Frequently asked questions

How long will my new hip last?

Modern hip replacements often last many years. Activity level, weight and implant choice affect longevity. Regular reviews help spot any problems.

Can young patients with avascular necrosis have hip replacement?

Yes. When the ball of the hip has collapsed, replacement often gives the best relief. Implant choices for younger patients aim for durability.

What are hip precautions?

They are movements to avoid early on, such as bending too far or crossing legs. They lower dislocation risk while tissues heal. Your therapist will explain.

Which bearing material is best?

Ceramic and highly cross-linked polyethylene combinations are commonly used. The choice depends on age and activity. Your surgeon will recommend one.

Can international patients travel with a new hip?

Yes, usually after about two weeks. Keep moving during the flight and stay hydrated. Blood thinners may be prescribed.
