Discectomy in India
Quick answer
Discectomy removes the part of a slipped (herniated) disc that is pressing on a spinal nerve, relieving sciatica or arm pain. It is for people whose nerve pain persists despite rest, medicines and physiotherapy, or who have weakness. Most international patients stay in India about one week.

Discs act as cushions between vertebrae. When the soft centre bulges out, it can pinch a nerve, causing shooting leg pain (sciatica), numbness or weakness. Many cases improve without surgery within weeks to months.
Surgery is considered when pain is severe and lasting, or there is progressive weakness. Discectomy can be done open (microdiscectomy with a microscope), through tubes (minimally invasive) or with an endoscope. The aim is to free the nerve while keeping as much healthy disc as possible.
Approaches: standard, minimally invasive or endoscopic
Standard microdiscectomy uses a small open cut and an operating microscope and is the long-established method. Minimally invasive discectomy works through tubes to spare muscle, and endoscopic discectomy uses an even smaller incision with a camera. Choice depends on the herniation and surgeon expertise.
Who needs discectomy
- Sciatica from a herniated lumbar disc not improving with non-surgical care
- Progressive leg or foot weakness
- Severe pain limiting daily life
- Cauda equina syndrome (emergency loss of bladder or bowel control)
How it is done
- MRI confirms the disc herniation and the nerve affected.
- General or spinal anaesthesia is given.
- A small cut is made over the spine.
- A small window of bone may be removed to reach the disc.
- The herniated fragment is removed and the nerve is freed.
- The wound is closed.
Before you travel to India
- Send a recent lumbar MRI.
- Describe leg pain, numbness and any weakness.
- Report any bladder or bowel changes urgently.
- Plan for an aisle seat on flights.
Recovery and flying home
- Often a one- or two-night stay.
- Walking starts the same day.
- Flying is often possible within about a week.
- Desk work usually resumes within a few weeks.
Risks
- Recurrent disc herniation
- Nerve injury
- Dural tear causing spinal fluid leak
- Infection
Alternatives
- Physiotherapy and nerve pain medicines
- An epidural steroid injection to calm the inflamed nerve
- Time, as many herniations improve naturally

Frequently asked questions
Will discectomy cure my back pain?
Discectomy mainly relieves leg pain from nerve pressure. Back pain may improve less. Your surgeon explains expectations.
Can the disc slip again?
Yes, a recurrence at the same level is possible. Good posture and core strength help. Some need repeat surgery.
Is a discectomy urgent?
Usually not, unless there is weakness or bladder or bowel problems. Then urgent surgery may be needed. Seek care immediately for these symptoms.
How soon can I walk?
Many patients walk on the day of surgery. Gentle walking aids recovery. Avoid heavy lifting early.
Is a short trip enough for an international patient?
Often yes; around a week in India is common. Longer flights need care to avoid stiffness. Walk during the flight.
