Cochlear Implant in India
Quick answer
A cochlear implant is an electronic device placed in the inner ear that stimulates the hearing nerve directly, bypassing damaged hair cells. It helps children and adults with severe to profound hearing loss who gain little from hearing aids. Surgery needs a short hospital stay, and device switch-on follows a few weeks later.

At a glance
A cochlear implant has two parts. The internal part is placed under the skin behind the ear, with a thin electrode inserted into the cochlea (the hearing organ). The external processor, worn on the ear, picks up sound and sends it through the skin to the implant.
The brain must learn to interpret these new signals, so speech and hearing therapy after surgery is essential. Children born deaf often do best when implanted young. Adults who lost hearing later in life can also benefit greatly.
Who needs cochlear implant
- Severe to profound hearing loss in both ears
- Little benefit from well-fitted hearing aids
- Young children with congenital deafness
- Adults with progressive hearing loss
- Hearing loss after meningitis, where early surgery may be urgent
- Single-sided deafness in selected cases
How it is done
- Hearing tests, CT and MRI scans confirm suitability.
- General anaesthesia is given.
- A cut is made behind the ear and the mastoid bone is opened.
- A small opening is made into the cochlea.
- The electrode is inserted and the receiver is secured under the skin.
- The device is tested in theatre, and the wound is closed.
Before you travel to India
- Detailed audiology reports, including hearing aid trial results
- CT of the temporal bone and MRI of the brain and inner ear
- Vaccination records, especially against pneumococcus and meningitis
- Speech and developmental assessment for children
- A parent or family member to attend therapy sessions
Recovery and flying home
- Most patients stay in hospital for one or two nights.
- Dizziness or ear fullness can occur for a few days.
- The device is switched on after the wound heals, often a few weeks later.
- Plan to stay in India until switch-on and the first mapping sessions, or return for them.
- Long-term auditory-verbal therapy continues at home.
Risks
- Infection of the wound or device
- Dizziness or balance problems
- Change in taste or facial nerve weakness (rare)
- Device failure needing replacement
- Meningitis risk, reduced by vaccination
- Loss of any remaining natural hearing in that ear
Alternatives
- Powerful hearing aids
- Bone-anchored hearing devices for some types of loss
- Auditory brainstem implant when the hearing nerve is absent
- Sign language and communication support

Frequently asked questions
When will I or my child hear after a cochlear implant?
Sound starts at switch-on, usually a few weeks after surgery. At first it can sound strange. Hearing improves with regular mapping and therapy.
What age is right for a cochlear implant in children?
Children born deaf often benefit most when implanted early in life. Your team will assess readiness. Delays can affect speech development.
Can I have an MRI after a cochlear implant?
Many modern implants allow MRI under certain conditions. Always check your device model. Carry your implant card.
How do we manage programming after returning home?
The device needs regular programming (mapping). Choose a brand with service centres in your country. Some sessions can be done remotely.
Should both ears be implanted?
Bilateral implants can improve hearing in noise and sound direction. This depends on your hearing and funding. Your surgeon will advise.
