Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery in India
Quick answer
Cleft lip and palate surgery closes a gap in the upper lip, the roof of the mouth, or both, to improve feeding, speech, hearing and appearance. It is mainly for babies and children, with later operations for some teens and adults. Each operation usually needs a short hospital stay plus follow-up in India.

At a glance
A cleft forms when parts of the lip or palate do not join before birth. It can affect one or both sides and range from a small notch to a wide gap reaching the nose. Children with a cleft palate may struggle to feed, have ear infections and find some speech sounds hard.
Care is a long-term plan rather than a single operation. Lip repair is usually done in infancy, palate repair before speech develops, and later steps may include bone grafting in the gum, nose and lip refinements, orthodontics and jaw surgery. A team approach brings surgeons, speech therapists, ENT and dental specialists together.
Who needs cleft lip and palate surgery
- Babies born with a cleft lip, with or without a cleft palate
- Children with a cleft palate affecting feeding or speech
- Nasal speech or air escaping through the nose (velopharyngeal insufficiency) after earlier repair
- Gaps in the gum ridge needing a bone graft before adult teeth come in
- Teenagers and adults wanting revision of the lip or nose
How it is done
- The team assesses your child, checks weight and general health, and plans timing.
- Some babies first wear a moulding device (nasoalveolar moulding) to narrow the gap.
- Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon rejoins the lip muscles and skin and shapes the nostril.
- Palate repair closes the roof of the mouth and repositions the muscles needed for speech.
- Ear tubes (grommets) may be placed at the same time if fluid is present.
- Later operations, such as gum bone graft or nose revision, follow at set ages.
Before you travel to India
- Your child's birth and growth records, weight and feeding history
- Any hearing tests, speech assessments or previous operation notes
- Clear photos of the lip, nose and palate
- Both parents or a legal guardian should travel, with documents for consent
- Plan a feeding method for the journey, such as special cleft bottles
Recovery and flying home
- Hospital stay is usually short, often a few days
- Arm splints may be used so the baby does not rub the repair
- Feeding is resumed carefully with guidance from nurses
- Flying home is usually possible once feeding is good and the wound is checked
- Speech therapy, hearing checks and dental care continue over the years at home
Risks
- Bleeding or infection
- Breakdown of the repair or a small hole in the palate (fistula)
- Nasal speech needing further treatment
- Visible scar or asymmetry of the lip and nose
- Anaesthetic risks in young children
Alternatives
- Timing changes based on your child's health and weight
- Speech appliances (obturators) when surgery must be delayed
- Staged repair for wide clefts

Frequently asked questions
At what age is cleft lip and palate surgery usually done?
Lip repair is usually done in the first months of life. Palate repair commonly follows before the child starts speaking in words. Your surgeon will set timing based on growth and health.
Will my child need more than one operation?
Many children do. Besides lip and palate repair, some need ear tubes, bone grafting in the gum, nose refinement or speech surgery later. A long-term plan is made early.
Can older children or adults have cleft surgery?
Yes. Unrepaired clefts can still be closed later in life, and earlier repairs can be revised. Speech results may differ when palate repair is late.
How do we continue care after returning home from India?
Ask for full operation notes and a care plan. Speech therapy, hearing checks and dental care are best arranged near home. Some families return to India for later stages.
How will my baby feed after lip repair?
Nurses will show you how to feed safely, often with special bottles or a spoon at first. Feeding usually improves quickly. Report poor feeding, fever or bleeding.
