Very large breasts can cause chronic pain, deep bra-strap grooves, skin rashes and difficulty with exercise. Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) removes part of the breast tissue and lifts what remains. The nipple is moved higher to sit in a more natural position.
Many women describe relief from pain and easier movement afterwards. The scars are permanent, commonly running around the nipple, down to the breast fold and sometimes along the fold. Some tissue removed is sent to the laboratory to check for any hidden abnormality.

How it is done

- The nipple and areola are moved higher while staying attached to their blood supply.
- The breast is reshaped and closed in layers; drains may be placed.
