Brain Aneurysm Coiling in India
Quick answer
Brain aneurysm coiling fills a bulging brain artery with soft platinum coils, threaded through a catheter from the groin or wrist. It treats ruptured and unruptured aneurysms without opening the skull. For planned cases the hospital stay is often a few days; after a bleed it is much longer.

A brain aneurysm is a weak, ballooning spot on an artery. If it bursts, it causes bleeding around the brain, which is an emergency. Coiling is an endovascular treatment (done from inside the blood vessels).
An interventional neuroradiologist or endovascular neurosurgeon guides a fine tube up to the aneurysm. Tiny coils are packed into it so blood clots inside and the aneurysm is sealed off. Stents or balloons may be used to hold coils in place in wide-necked aneurysms.
Who needs brain aneurysm coiling
- Ruptured aneurysms causing subarachnoid haemorrhage (bleeding around the brain)
- Unruptured aneurysms with features that raise the risk of bursting, such as size or growth
- Aneurysms deep in the brain or at the back of the head that are hard to reach surgically
- Older patients or those with other illnesses who are less fit for open surgery
- Aneurysms with a neck shape suited to coils
How it is done
- General anaesthesia is usually given.
- A catheter is inserted into an artery in the groin or wrist.
- Using live X-ray and contrast dye, the catheter is guided up to the brain arteries.
- A smaller microcatheter is placed inside the aneurysm.
- Coils are released one by one until the aneurysm is filled; a stent or balloon may support them.
- Final pictures confirm the aneurysm is sealed and the catheter is removed.
Before you travel to India
- CT angiogram, MR angiogram or catheter angiogram images, not just reports
- Brain MRI or CT reports
- Blood pressure history and list of medicines, including blood thinners
- Kidney function tests, as contrast dye is used
- Unruptured aneurysms only: a ruptured aneurysm needs emergency care at the nearest capable hospital, not travel
Recovery and flying home
- After planned coiling, many patients stay in hospital for a few days
- After a rupture, stays are often a couple of weeks or more, mainly for bleed-related complications
- Most planned patients can fly home after a short period of observation, once the doctor clears them
- Blood-thinning tablets may be needed for months if a stent was used
- Follow-up imaging is required to check that the aneurysm stays sealed
Risks
- Stroke from a clot or blocked artery during the procedure
- Rupture of the aneurysm during treatment
- Aneurysm regrowth over time, which may need re-treatment
- Groin or wrist bruising or bleeding
- Reaction to contrast dye or kidney strain
Alternatives
- Surgical clipping, a durable open repair for suitable aneurysms
- Flow-diverter stents, for large or wide-necked aneurysms
- Regular imaging and blood pressure control, for small low-risk unruptured aneurysms

Frequently asked questions
Is coiling better than clipping?
Neither is better for everyone. Coiling is less invasive, while clipping may be more durable for some aneurysms. A joint team of surgeons and interventional specialists recommends the option suited to your aneurysm.
Will my aneurysm come back after coiling?
Some coiled aneurysms partly refill over time as the coils compact. That is why follow-up scans are important. Re-treatment is usually possible if needed.
Do all unruptured aneurysms need treatment?
No. Many small aneurysms are watched with scans. The decision depends on size, location, shape, age and family history.
Can I fly with a coiled aneurysm?
Once treated and stable, flying is generally considered safe. Your doctor will confirm timing before discharge. Avoid flying if you have a recent bleed until cleared.
Should I travel abroad for an unruptured aneurysm?
Many international patients do, after sending angiogram images for review. The team checks whether coiling suits your aneurysm shape before you book. Any sudden severe headache before travel needs emergency care locally.
