Graft-versus-host disease
Quick answer
Graft-versus-host disease, often called GVHD, happens when immune cells from a donor transplant attack the recipient's body. It can affect the skin, gut, liver, eyes and mouth. It may appear early or months later. Medicines help prevent and treat it. It does not occur after autologous transplants.
